Ma.to signs the first release of Spin Desire, "When Lights Are Low" EP
A new label based in Berlin makes its appearance - Spin Desire - and we already have the desire to spin their first record
The Spin Desire label is run by Jeyoh, a Paris-born DJ based in Berlin. Their first release is a four-tracker signed by Ma.To (Massimiliano Toscano), a very talented Italian rising artist, also based in Berlin since 2012. Since then, he had the pleasure to play for some of the best venues such as CDV and Hoppetosse and showcase his distribution label Off The Grid with a party series throughout Berlin.
The release overall gets you in a good dancing mood as all four tracks would perfectly fit the dancefloor during a central hours set. "Nabucoronasor", the first piece of the EP, initiates an uplifting state and gets your attention with its playful synths and vocal groove. Moving on with "Italian Summer", the second track gives us a nice disco vibe put in a tough, powerful manner. The A-side is definitely one for delivering some joy during a set and lifting up the crowd.
The track we chose to premiere, "Young Man With Denial", kicks off the B-side with some interesting industrial-like acidic sounds that give a Berlin vibe from the very start. The strong drum pattern has an interesting twist in order to break the 'loopy' mood and captivate you in its atmosphere, keeping your mind focused on the upcoming elements of the track. Furthermore, powerful hi-hats along with a killer snare and vintage inspired percussion definitely make for a good recipe. With the organ synth bringing a special ambience, inducing a dreamy state after being energized by the bass and drums combination, it feels like a deep breath after that crazy acidic bass frenzy. We have to say we are impressed by the artist's production technique of alternating two types of bass in pursuance of oscillating between an energy boost and a more melancholic feel.
"In A Mist" concludes the release with a smooth groove as well. Ma.to's approach to the breaky drum pattern accompanied by the electro robotic sounds resonates in a very sexy way here.
Overall these four tracks are remarkable both in their production as well as in how they emit a sort of energy that comes directly from the artist's soul. After listening, we feel like we know him a bit better and it certainly tickles our curiosity for his work in the future.
